FINDERS KEEPERS - The Green Shelter

Here’s the latest installment of FINDERS KEEPERS by Tanner Guduaskas and Alex Kilauano. This is a great series exploring some of the outer reaches of surfboard culture and history. For this one they set out to learn the origins of the green Shelter boards that Taylor Knox and Donavon Frankenreiter rode in Chris Malloy's film Shelter. We made Tanner one very similar to the original at 6’1 x 19” x 2 7/16”, which he took over to Oahu to ride as well. It's always a kick to see surfers of this caliber have a go on these contemporary shapes. View the whole piece above, and a description from Tanner below:

A deep dive into one of surfing’s most iconic shapes and the crew who carried it into myth. Growing up I loved watching Shelter on repeat. The story and cultural relevance that film had for me, set the tone for my love of surf films. In this episode, I set out to trace the lineage of the Campbell Brothers’ Bonzer design, the board that shaped eras and quietly pushed surfing forward. We sat down with Chris Malloy to revisit Shelter, the film that burned the Green Bonzer into surf culture forever. Taylor Knox, the whole crew, and a moment in time when surfing felt raw, creative, and free. This is part surf history, part treasure hunt, part love letter to the boards and the people who keep the craft alive. The Green Bonzer has stories. We went looking for them.
